Rid of Marianne!

Here’s a mix I made for my friend/enemy Marianne Ways! It’s for her, but you can download here if you want to!

Marianne is a Karaoke Queen, and she likes to sing. I made her a mix with songs that I think she’ll like, but that I also like. I went for interesting vocals (or just “fun to sing”), a lot of women, and also chose songs about hate (because I HATE Marianne) and about friendship (because Marianne is my good, good friend, hooray!). 

Disc One:

3. I Confess - English Beat
This is one of my favorite songs to sing - especially the part “My life’s not over, please get out, I know I’m shouting, I like to shout!” I got this record in high school and played this song for my dad, but he was not impressed. Another option for this mix was Murder by English Beat - another good song, and fits the theme of violence. But I like this one better because it’s more fun to sing. 

4. Happiness - Lisa Germano
It’s no secret that I LOVE Lisa Germano, and this is such a great song - saddest lyrics to a (somewhat) upbeat tune.

7. I Love You Mary Jane - Sonic Youth & Cypress Hill
OH SNAP, remember 1993’s cross-over soundtrack sensation Judgment Night? Marianne said “no Sonic Youth” but I think this song is fine. I often have it in my head with the lyrics “I Love You, Marianne.”  

8. Hard To Freak On (Missy Elliot/Strokes) - McSleazy
Nothing says 2000 like the mash-up. 

9. Three Girl Rhumba - Wire
Because Marianne likes Elastica! 

10. Boom Swagger Boom - Murder City Devils
A fun song with guest vocals by the lovely Andrea Zollo!

Because Marianne ain’t no goddamn son of a bitch. You better think about it, baby! 

14. Me! I Disconnect From You - Gary Numan
So much Gary Numan in my life lately! Guest vocals on the new Battles album, “Cars” at trivia night (theme was Transportation), Robert put Music For Chameleons on his Freakazoid mix, and I MET MY NUMBER ONE CELEBRITY CRUSH EVER, NOEL FIELDING, THROUGH MARIANNE, ZOMG!!!

Originally had New Lace Sleeves on the mix, but this one fits the theme better.

Did not intentionally follow a Kerry Kenney song with a Wet Hot American Summer re-mix, but there you have it. WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER! WOOOOOOOO!

13. Forever Live and Die - OMD
A pretty song in its own right, but I used it because it was the song they were playing (I think?) at SXSW this year, when the camera jib fell into the audience. Which is not funny, but is terrible and violent.

14. Hero - El May
From the Baxter soundtrack, which coincidentally was one of the prizes at Night of the Living (the awesome monthly Kurt Braunohler show at the PIT produced by Marianne) last week when Michael Showalter was a guest.

Not sure if Marianne will like this, but S is one of my favorites - Seattle’s Jenn Ghetto (ex-Carissa’s Wierd).

Marianne is great. 

17. More Than a Feeling - Treepeople
Because Marianne lost the first copy of this mix that I gave her (GOOD JOB, MARIANNE), I had time to redo it, replacing Boston with this excellent Treepeople cover from the Bostonot double 7”. Finally had a reason to use it! A karaoke staple, of course, but it also uses the name Marianne (“I see my Marianne walking away” GOD, I WISH!).
